Resveratrol is one of the great successful substances of modern times. Many major figures in the media as well as the scientific community have been hailing it as the latest medical breakthrough, with some even calling it the substance that can prolong human life indefinitely.

All these claims aside, when you actually come to buy some of the stuff, you are faced with all manner of possibilities. There are a high number of companies and individuals out there online and in the real world that offer a wide variety of Resveratrol products. Which to buy? And why?

Well, there is some weight to the argument that states that pure Resveratrol should be bought, rather than any substance that has been altered or modified to suit the needs of the company that makes it. Basically, if any substance states that it is ‘90% pure’, then you are going to find that the substance contained within has more of the Trans stuff contained than the CIS stuff. It is therefore more pure, and better for you.

Resveratrol has had an amazing amount of media attention in recent times. From being mentioned on TV chat shows, to massive coverage in the world’s newspapers and online forums, the substance has been hailed as the biggest medical breakthrough for years, and a real fountain of youth substance for us all to take if we want to live longer.

However, what about the side effects? These are not many in number, but it is worthwhile knowing at least something about how they are presenting for people who take the substance. Does it have incredibly negative effects, the kind that makes it embarrassing to be in public? Also it is important to remember that the following effects that are described are not based on strict clinical trials. These are the experiences of normal people who have taken the substance, and as such are somewhat anecdotal.

There is a common occurrence of feeling quite stimulated when taking Resveratrol for example. Some people describe this as feeling ‘buzzed’ or high on a drug. If you were to compare it with something else, you could compare it to the feeling that you get when you drink say, a black coffee.

Insomnia has been mentioned as a possible side effect of use of Resveratrol. This may last up to two weeks. While this is not entirely pleasant, remember that all side effects for all substances are not common, and tend to happen to just a few people. If you take Resveratrol and feel this unfortunate side effect, either ride it out, or seek medical advice from your doctor. In any case, it will not last too long.

There have also been some instances of an increase in blood pressure. While this is not common, if it does happen to you when you take the substance, then seek medical attention.

As with all side effects, none are common. But if some do present in your experience of taking Resveratrol, and they are unpleasant, seek medical attention. Wonder drug or not, you still need to take care of your health.

In scientific studies at Harvard Medical School, resveratrol was administered to laboratory mice that were also fed a high fat, high calorie diet. In the experiment, the mice were divided into three groups. The first group was the control group and was fed a standard diet, and the other two groups were fed a high fat diet where sixty percent of their caloric intake was derived from fat. One of the high fat groups was also given high doses of resveratrol.

In comparing the two high fat groups, they both gained weight and become obese, but the group that had taken resveratrol did not show signs of insulin resistance or develop fatty livers. They also had a longer, healthier, and more active life than the other group. The researchers concluded that resveratrol could protect the body against many health problems that are associated with a diet that is high in fats.

In another study, a scientist named Johan Auwerx, at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in France, reported that large quantities of resveratrol were administered to mice that were fed a high fat diet, and they did not gain weight or develop metabolic syndrome.

Auwerx felt these same results would be seen in humans, as he found an increase in the mitochondria levels in the muscle cells of the mice that consumed the resveratrol. Mitochondria are part of the cells that create energy, and an increase in mitochondria meant the mice were able to burn more calories and avoid weight gain.

Resveratrol tests have been conducted on yeast, worms, fish, fruit flies, and mice. All of the results have been very promising in prolonging their lifespan and increasing their endurance.

Researchers at the University of Ulm in Germany found that resveratrol prevented pre-fat cells from becoming large, mature fat cells.

Studies about the effects of resveratrol in humans are still in their preliminary stages. Finding a substance that can delay the onset of age-related illnesses in humans and allow them to live longer, higher quality lives would be ground breaking.

Thousands of people flood to the beaches every summer in the warm, sunny weather despite many warnings of the harmful effects of the sun. Researchers are continually looking for ways to protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, specifically the UVB component that causes skin cancer. As a portion of newly diagnosed cancers worldwide, skin cancer accounts for 30 percent and radiation from the sun accounts for ninety percent of all skin cancers.

A study was conducted by the University of Wisconsin to test if resveratrol, an antioxidant found in grape skins and red wine, was an effective treatment to prevent skin damage caused by exposure to UVB rays.
The risk of skin cancer will increase when repeated exposure to UVB radiation occurs, so these researchers tested a topical cream containing resveratrol on the skin of SKH-1 hairless mice that were exposed to UVB rays for seven consecutive days. The cream was applied to their skin thirty minutes prior to UVB exposure. They also conducted a second test where the cream was applied five minutes following exposure. The results of these tests showed a significant reduction in the development of tumors when resveratrol was applied both prior to and following UVB radiation exposure.

They tested how resveratrol affected the survivin, a molecule that is expressed in human cancers, controls cell division, and is part of the inhibitor of apoptosis family. Survivin is found in human cancer cells but not in normal cells, and is the target for many anticancer treatments. This study showed that after a treatment of resveratrol, the levels of survivin protein expression significantly decreased. Resveratrol was shown to protect the skin from UVB damage by causing cancer cells to self-destruct. It also stopped increases in skin thickness caused by UVB radiation.

To treat a specific health problem with resveratrol, you can obtain the most concentrated dosage in the herb called Japanese Knotweed. This herb is typically used as a laxative to treat constipation or improve regularity.

Japanese Knotweed is also the source of resveratrol in most food supplements, although resveratrol can also be found in other food sources such as peanuts and grape skins.

This amount will be sure to cause diarrhea, and possibly dehydration that can harm your health. Consider that a liter of dark, red wine that has one of the highest concentration levels of resveratrol, contains only about 12.59 mg of the substance.

The amount of resveratrol that will provide long-term health benefits is between 20 to 50 mg daily, according to a well-respected doctor of naturopathic medicine. Higher doses are recommended for therapeutic purposes.

You may know someone personally who has been affected by prostate cancer, and more is known now about treatments of this disease than just a few years ago. The American Cancer Society estimated 27,050 deaths in the United States resulting from prostate cancer in 2007. The 29 mice were five weeks of age when they started receiving the resveratrol supplements, which was administered in a powder form. Daily blood tests were taken from the mice to confirm the presence of resveratrol in their blood. The experiment ran for a period of seven months, and after this time, the mice in control group were compared to the mice receiving the resveratrol supplement. The control group had a 23 percent incidence of prostate cancer, where the group eating resveratrol had an incidence of only three percent. This result is equivalent to an 87 percent reduction in cancer.

If these same results can be proven in humans, then resveratrol would be an effective cancer treatment.

If humans consumed a bottle of red wine each day, the negative side effects to your health would outweigh any positive ones gained from ingesting resveratrol. Therefore, the best way to consume the quantity of resveratrol needed to improve your health is to take a high quality nutritional supplement that contains resveratrol, along with other essential vitamins and minerals. By taking a supplement, you have the benefits of resveratrol without the negative effects of consuming large quantities of alcohol.
