Resveratrol, what does it do?

When it comes to business, the company or companies that manage to put together a product that everyone on the whole planet not just wants but actively desires can expect to make millions. In recent times, something rather amazing has happened, and it all revolves around the wonderful thing that is Resveratrol.

It has until quite recently been associated with its presence in red wine. This drink has been associated with the prolonging of human life for some time. In fact, medical professionals have always said that red wine in moderation is something that can lead to great health benefits being enjoyed by the drinker. Apart from the obvious result of many people enjoying plenty f red wine for medicinal purposes, this line of research has brought into focus the presence of Resveratrol.

Some are calling Resveratrol the biggest medical discovery of the century. While it may have amazing potential, it is worthwhile, taking a careful look at what it actually does before any of the wilder claims are considered.

One of the biggest claims made by scientists when it comes to Resveratrol is that it can actually stop the progress of cancer. While this may seem a little far-fetched, it has actually been proven in some clinical trials to slow down the symptoms of cancerous growths and their effects on the body. If this is the case, then you can see why some people actively believe that the substance has this amazing cancer defeating ability.
In a link back to the red wine aspect, many scientists have stated that Resveratrol can actively hep in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. This has been known about red wine for many years, and the Resveratrol that comes from the grapes that help make red wine, this is no surprise.

The National Institute of Ageing has perhaps made the greatest impact on the public’s perception of Resveratrol. A study published by the institute found that the substance had an amazing impact on the health of mice. Rather than have a mildly positive impact on their health, the substance was found to dramatically improve the life spans of the mice that were studied in laboratories. Ever since these findings were published, people have buying Resveratrol in droves.

These claims are all very exciting and obviously prove to be very attractive to the general public. If you need to understand the effects of Resveratrol on the human body in a simple way, just remember that it is derived form the red wine group, and you will appreciate how it is viewed to help with health overall, and ageing in general.

Fight Prostate Cancer With Resveratrol

You may know someone personally who has been affected by prostate cancer, and more is known now about treatments of this disease than just a few years ago. The American Cancer Society estimated 27,050 deaths in the United States resulting from prostate cancer in 2007. By understanding the benefits of resveratrol and its ability to prevent cancer, we hope that this research will help cancer survivors fight this deadly disease. If a member of your family has had prostate cancer, then information about resveratrol and its cancer prevention benefits may help to stop the cancer before it begins.

Resveratrol can be found in the skins of red grapes, and has been shown to prevent the growth of cancer cells. This is due in part to its antioxidant properties that come from the chemicals in plants. Research shows that Asian men have a lower incidence of prostate cancer than other cultures. This may be due to their diets that are high in fresh fruits and vegetables.

The results of a study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham using male mice showed that the risk of developing prostate tumors decreased by 87 percent when the mice were fed resveratrol. The treated mice also showed no harm to their systems from ingesting resveratrol. The lack of toxicity in resveratrol use is very promising.

The experiment used 82 mice in total, with 53 mice acting as a control group and the remaining 29 mice ingested 625 mg per kg of body weight each day. The mice were also fed their regular diet during the test period. The amount of resveratrol used on the mice in the experiment would be the equivalent to the amount present in one bottle of red wine.

The 29 mice were five weeks of age when they started receiving the resveratrol supplements, which was administered in a powder form. Daily blood tests were taken from the mice to confirm the presence of resveratrol in their blood. The experiment ran for a period of seven months, and after this time, the mice in control group were compared to the mice receiving the resveratrol supplement. The control group had a 23 percent incidence of prostate cancer, where the group eating resveratrol had an incidence of only three percent. This result is equivalent to an 87 percent reduction in cancer.

If these same results can be proven in humans, then resveratrol would be an effective cancer treatment.

If humans consumed a bottle of red wine each day, the negative side effects to your health would outweigh any positive ones gained from ingesting resveratrol. Therefore, the best way to consume the quantity of resveratrol needed to improve your health is to take a high quality nutritional supplement that contains resveratrol, along with other essential vitamins and minerals. By taking a supplement, you have the benefits of resveratrol without the negative effects of consuming large quantities of alcohol.

Resveratrol in Red Wine

Experts have debated at length whether moderate consumption of alcohol delivers any health benefits. When considering the benefits of red wine consumption, it is not the alcohol content that is receiving the attention but amount of resveratrol that is present in red wine.

Sources of resveratrol can be found in several plants including peanuts, mulberries, blueberries, dark chocolate, cocoa, and eucalyptus, although it is highly concentrated in the skins of red grapes. These grapes come in several varieties used to make wine, such as Vitis vinifera, muscadine, and labrusca grapes. Although resveratrol is found most abundantly in the fruit skins, it is also found in the vines, roots, seeds and stalks of these plants.

These plants produce resveratrol, a substance that acts as a natural antibiotic to protect from disease. In cooler climates, fungal infections are more common than in warmer climates. In response to this threat of infection, the grapes produce higher levels of resveratrol when grown in cool climates.

The reason that wine is an excellent source of resveratrol is attributed to the length of time that grape skins are kept in the product while it ferments. Red wine has higher concentration levels than white wine, as the grape skins are removed early in the process when making white wine. However, grape juice does not contain significant levels of resveratrol, as the product is not fermented.

For many years, Japanese and Chinese cultures have used resveratrol to treat fungal diseases, inflammation, allergies, and hypertensive disorders. The scientific community only took notice of this amazing supplement recently, when studying the benefits of red wine consumption.

While observing the French culture, a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease was discovered than in other developed cultures with a similar high fat diet. This result was attributed in part to their red wine consumption and the amount of resveratrol it contained.

A study by Dr. Paliyath at the University of Guelph, Ontario, showed that consumption of grapes and red wine can decrease the growth of cancerous tumors in immune-impaired mice. The researchers separated the mice into three separate groups. For a period of thirty three days, one group was fed polyphenols (an antioxidant thought to protect against health problems and the effects of aging) extracted from Merlot grapes, the second group was fed polyphenols extracted from Merlot wine, and the third group did not receive any polyphenols. After this time, the mice received an injection of breast cancer cells that were estrogen negative and then were tested for tumor growth. The first group who were fed the grape extract showed no signs of tumor growth. The second group showed some tumor growth, but the rate of growth was about fifty percent slower than the third group that received no polyphenols. Both red wine and grapes seemed to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Further studies are now being conducted on the long-term effects of red wine consumption, in particular resveratrol, and its effectiveness as an antioxidant and a cancer-fighting agent. Although the results are still inconclusive, there does not seem to be a negative health risk associated with resveratrol in red wine.
The American Heart Association suggests that the maximum amount of alcohol to consume daily not exceed one or two glasses. Any more than this amount will cause negative side effects that will counterbalance the positive health effects of resveratrol.

Getting the Maximum Benefit from Resveratrol

Many supplements for resveratrol are currently available on the market today, but you need to be careful what you buy, as many are simply a waste of money. Although extensive research has shown the many health benefits of this supplement, resveratrol must enter the blood stream to provide any benefits.

Trans-resveratrol is a form of resveratrol that is well absorbed by humans when taken orally. Tests have been conducted on the amount of trans-resveratrol that actually reaches the blood stream when people drink red wine on an empty stomach, drink red wine with food, or take a resveratrol supplement that has no enteric coating. The results showed that in none of these three instances did a significant amount of trans-resveratrol actually enter the blood stream.

These studies used the form of resveratrol called trans-resveratrol to test the health benefits. The highest levels of concentration in supplements containing trans-resveratrol are up to fifty percent. If an enteric coating is applied to the supplement, then a greater amount will enter the blood stream, but most manufacturers do not put this coating on their products. If you ingest resveratrol in either a powder or liquid form, you will not receive any of the health benefits.

Resveratrol can be found in the skins of grapes, in raisins, peanuts, mulberries, blueberries, eucalyptus trees, and in the Japanese Knotweed plant. There is some known benefit supplied when drinking red wine, however researchers believe this is not caused by resveratrol. The amount of red wine you would need to consume to see a positive impact (about a liter a day) would be so great that you would damage your liver in the process.

Therefore, in order to see health benefits from resveratrol, you should take the product as supplement. It should be combined with other nutrients and protected with an enteric coating so it will eventually enter directly into the blood stream by way of the small intestine. These benefits include a stronger heart, a stronger metabolism, and a longer and a healthier life.

Although no one really understands why resveratrol provides these health benefits, several theories have emerged to explain how it works. One theory is that trans-resveratrol stimulates a gene that decreases a free radical called superoxide. Over time, superoxide can cause erosion in DNA. This means that the resveratrol supplements should also contain Vitamin C, enzymes, and glutathione. By stimulating this gene, the superoxide is reduced to hydrogen peroxide, a free radical. When Vitamin C is at work, the hydrogen peroxide is reduced to water. Adding glutathione and enzymes to the supplement will boost the effects of the Vitamin C by making it last for a longer time.

For the resveratrol supplement to be most effective, the correct combination of antioxidants and nutrients must be present. Simply taking resveratrol and adding it to your diet will not give you the maximum health benefit. There are many types of plant extracts that supply a benefit to humans, and the best manufacturers will combine these extracts in the proper way to give you the most powerful boost to your health.

Diabetics Benefit from Resveratrol

Resveratrol has been shown to help prevent and treat many diseases, including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Most of us have friends or family members that suffer from Type 2 diabetes, as our population ages, so a supplement containing resveratrol will provide numerous health benefits.

Recent studies have shown that resveratrol reduces the blood sugar level in those people suffering from Type 2 diabetes. The amount taken was 2.5 grams and 5 grams, and the patients had no negative side effects. Additional research is currently being conducted on the potential of this treatment, and if lower quantities will produce the same effects.

Laboratory testing was conducted on mice that were fed resveratrol in addition to their regular diet. The results showed the mice had improved metabolism, energy levels, did not gain weight, and did not develop diabetes. Thus, resveratrol would be effective in treating obesity, and also provides improved health for diabetics.

Although you can ingest resveratrol from drinking red wine, as this ingredient is found in grape skins, there are side effects from consuming alcohol. Many nutritional supplements are currently available that contain resveratrol made from grapes. As a supplement, you can read the label to determine the amount of resveratrol content, and taking a daily tablet is an easy way to obtain the associated health benefits. An effective multi-supplement should also contain other essential vitamins and minerals, and herbal extracts, as these nutrients all work together to provide you with better health.

There has been much information published recently about the health ...

Getting Your Resveratrol from Grapes

There has been much information published recently about the health benefits associated with drinking red wine. This is due, in part, to the fact that the grapes that are used to make the wine contain a component called resveratrol.

To produce red wine, the grape skins are fermented for a long period of time, which allows a high amount of resveratrol to enter the product. However, to gain a significant benefit from the resveratrol, you would have to consume more than a liter of alcohol each day, and this would lead to other health problems.
The resveratrol in grapes is found mostly in their skins and seeds, and its presence can also be found in cranberries, bilberries, blueberries, and peanuts. By adding this amazing substance to the diet, it has been shown to prevent heart disease, decrease cholesterol, and allow humans to live longer, healthier lives.

For centuries, the Japanese have used resveratrol to treat many diseases, but it is only recently that Western cultures are also discovering its medicinal properties, including a treatment to prolong life and turn back the clock on aging. It can accomplish this mission because it is a strong antioxidant that attacks free radical cells without damaging healthy cells. Free radical cells cause mutations to healthy cells, which can lead to cancer and hasten the aging process.

Consuming grapes each day may not suit everyone, and you would need to eat a large quantity to obtain the amount of resveratrol to improve your health, which is not practical. An alternate source of resveratrol is an extract from the Japanese Knotweed, a large herbaceous perennial plant that is native to Asia, Japan, China and Korea. This plant contains a high concentration level of resveratrol.

Most nutritional experts recommend that the most effective way to ensure your daily intake of resveratrol is to take a supplement. Most supplements use the Japanese Knotweed as their source of resveratrol. You should use a natural product with 10 to 50 mg of trans-resveratrol, the type that is easily digested. The supplement should contain other vitamins and nutrients that work together to ensure the maximum health benefit.

Red Wines Have Different Levels of Resveratrol

For a few years now resveratrol has been in the news as a “super antioxidant” with enormous health advantages derived mainly from red wine, the media hook. Not all red wines are created equal and so not all have the same concentration of resveratrol and thus may not act in the same healthful ways. New research has been conducted on a variety of indiscriminately selected red wines to resolve the issue of resveratrol concentration.

A natural antioxidant, resveratrol is derived from different fruits such as grapes and pomegranates and also in peanuts and other foods grown from plants. Resveratrol and grape skins means it is found in red wine due mainly to the wine making process. Resveratrol has been shown to increase ones defenses against a wide range of diseases and ailments most notably Parkinson’s disease, forms of cancers, cardio vascular illness and it has been widely publicized of late as having anti aging properties.

This anti-cancer element to resveratrol has peaked the curiosity of the scientific community resulting in numerous studies. Even with all the healthful data being produced from research no one has yet methodically or analytically tested its concentrations specifically in red wine. This has meant there is a natural assumption that if you drink one variety of red wine you will gain the same benefits as any other bottle of wine in the rack.
These folks would be wrong. There are most certainly diverse concentrations of resveratrol in various red wines. Researchers are using the latest technology, notably the High Performance Chromatography or HPLC as well as Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry or LCMS, which divide and assemble the ingredients which exist in red wines.

The idea behind the research is to have the ability to suggest the most beneficial type of wine from all of those being studied and examined. Their investigation will also be valuable to wine makers, vintners, suppliers, and sellers so they can advocate the use of healthful labeling on their goods. The long term plan is for consumers to walk down the wine aisle and simply search out the label for resveratrol amounts within the bottles they are looking at purchasing.

Growing Proof Confirms Red Wine Antioxidant Kills Cancer

Experts studying a natural antioxidant derived from the skin of grapes and found in red wine say it can assist in the destruction of pancreatic cancer cells. It will attack the cells main power supply, the mitochondria, disabling its utility. The research showed that a two pronged attack of the affected pancreatic cells with resveratrol, the antioxidant along with radiation treatment caused cancer cell death. This defensive treatment combination provoked a kind of cell death referred to in cancer treatment as apoptosis which is vital and much sought after in cancer treatment.

There could be positive repercussions for cancer patients based on data derived from this scientific investigation. There are no contraindications concerning the consumption of red wine during treatment with either radiation or chemo. Physicians may however suggest patients limit themselves to drinking grape juice. It is doubtful anyone would be asked to give up reasonable consumption of red wine during treatment.
There is some concern that the interest in antioxidants might be premature and that they could possibly wind up shielding the cancer tissues. This kind of alarmist thought has been downplayed by the research experts. They claim that not only does the resveratrol seek out and damage the cancer cells at the membrane of the cellular malignancy, they also provide security to the undamaged healthy tissue from the harm and distress due to irradiation.

Resveratrol and antioxidant exploration is quite attractive and being vigorously studied just now, the difficulty is learning what it does within the cell and how much is required to be effective. In the case of pancreatic cancer, discoveries have been realized determining a significant element of the problem. The resveratrol appears to have an impact on the tumor cells that make them susceptible to the radiation therapy while leaving good tissue relatively unharmed.

Evidence proves that resveratrol is capable of defending plants from fungus and bacteria. Science papers have reported that purified sources have the power enhance anti cancer, anti-inflammatory and atherogenic properties, they also show they can change cell development. Research has shown that other antioxidants are available from natural supplies such as caffeine, melatonin, polyphenols, vitamin C and E as well as flavonoids.

There have been copious numbers of studies, particularly of late, that have yet to find evidence of obvious questions when researching at the cellular plane, how and why does resveratrol work? One researcher began experimenting with resveratrol and desensitizing of tumors; he made the link regarding the targeting of the mitochondria.

A flurry of antioxidant studies in recent years has not proven how and why they work at the cellular level. At the suggestion of a young scientist in his lab, Okunieff began studying resveratrol as a tumor sensitizer. That is when they discovered its link to the mitochondria.

This particular breakthrough was significant since, same as the cell nucleus, the mitochondria includes and controls its own DNA and with an ability to provide the cell nonstop power when at its peak of effectiveness. It makes sense that when this energy source is impeded you would also impede the growth of cancer.

Cancerous pancreatic cells were split into two groups by scientists, cells without resveratrol testing and with resveratrol at 50 mg per ml [compared to red wine with 30 mg per ml] and combined this with radiation ionization. Higher levels of resveratrol shouldn’t be a concern provided the physician is observing. When the mitochondria activity was assessed – according to cell function when treated with resveratrol as well as cell death or apoptosis, reactionary oxygen species at the cell level, and cell membrane response to the introduction of the antioxidant – all studied closely.

These laboratory studies and data demonstrated the resveratrol to:

Decreased the effectiveness of proteins within the cancerous pancreatic tissue cell nexus which are depended on to flush residual chemotherapy from the cell thus rendering the cells chemo sensitive.

Stimulated the development of ROS or reactive oxygen species, that are materials flowing in the body’s of human beings that seem to be appearing in a number of types of diseases, as soon as ROS is triggered, the cells are fated to die off.

Cell death or apoptosis was discovered and most probably because of the ROS being triggered.

They removed polarization of the mitochondria and doing so reduced the cells prospects of tasking themselves. Irradiation on its own does less damage to the mitochondrial nexus.

Researchers also intended to examine the reasons why the pancreatic tumor cells appeared significantly anti-compliant to chemo treatment. The pancreas gland is what provides insulin and sugar regulation in the body. It forces or directs strong digestive enzymes to the beginning of the small intestines from the stomach. The process is detrimental to the chemo action because it flushes the required chemo treatment from the pancreatic cells. Nevertheless, resveratrol could reduce the action needed to flush the chemo from the cells, same as its action versus a cancer cells power center.

One expert researcher noted that obviously more knowledge is required, but the current evidence points toward resveratrol showing potential in the future as a significant element in the fight against cancer. The research team also recognized that antioxidants such as resveratrol had the ability to utilize particular chemical substance elements and targets and made these more effectual.

Resveratrol – An Answer To The French Paradox

Resveratrol has been receiving a great amount of attention lately as a way to improve health and prolong life. It also acts as an antioxidant, and may answer the question of the “French Paradox”.

This term refers to the question of why the rates of heart disease among those living in France are lower relative to those in other parts of the developed world. This has puzzled scientists for many years, as the French consume a diet that is high in fatty foods that clog the arteries, such as cheeses, buttery pastries, and cholesterol. Although the French have many fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and olive oil in their diets, many believe the French Paradox is due to their regular consumption of red wine. The “French Paradox” was what prompted scientists to investigate the health benefits of consuming red wine.

Many believe that consuming moderate amounts of alcohol may protect the heart and decrease the incidence of cardiovascular disease by 20 to 30 percent. However, scientists are beginning to discover that consuming resveratrol in red wine may be the real cause of improved health, rather than the alcohol.
It is well known that fat-soluble antioxidants protect the human body from harmful free radicals that are damaging chemicals thought to cause cataracts, cancer, and fat build up in the arteries. Because resveratrol contained in red wine acts as an antioxidant, its effects on humans is beneficial. In laboratory tests, resveratrol has been proven to also have anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Plants produce resveratrol when they respond to stress in their environment, such as dehydration, nutrient deprivation, and attacks by pathogenic organisms. These defensive molecules are called phytoalexins, a Greek word meaning plant and protector.

Resveratrol is primarily found in the skins of red and black grapes, so red wine is a good source of this nutrient. If you plan to obtain your supply of resveratrol from consuming wine, then darker, richer colored wines are generally best. The quantity of resveratrol in the wine is determined by the amount of time that the grape skins and pulp ferment. If the wine is darker in color, then it has fermented for a longer period of time and the amount of resveratrol in the wine will be greater. White wines contain very limited amounts of resveratrol.

Typically, the red wines that are produced in the Mediterranean, sunny climates will have the highest content of resveratrol. Those grapes grown in high altitudes also have high resveratrol content, as they suffer from exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation. However, these wines also tend to be the highest in alcohol content.

In a small, 5-ounce glass of dark red wine, you may obtain 2 mg of resveratrol. The amount of resveratrol that is recommended on a daily basis is between 10 and 50 mg, which would mean consuming a large quantity of wine to reach this level, and this could be dangerous to your health.

Alcohol is a toxic substance, and consuming alcohol leads to oxidative stress, impairs judgment and decision-making abilities, and promotes inflammation. Alcohol also speeds up the breakdown of antioxidants in the blood, which speeds up their elimination from the body so they are less effective in fighting infections. However, moderate consumption of alcohol provides benefits to the cardiovascular system, so if you enjoy an occasional glass of red wine, then you will also enjoy the health benefits of resveratrol.

If you do not like to consume wine due to its taste or alcohol content, there are other sources to obtain resveratrol. These include peanuts, red grapes, bilberries and cranberries. Many choose to use nutritional supplements that contain resveratrol, such as red wine or red grape extracts. These supplements also contain antioxidant polyphenols, which rid the body of hazardous wastes.

Resveratrol has no known toxic effects, although it thins the blood and prevents blood clotting. Therefore, it is not recommended to individuals who take anti-coagulant or anti-inflammatory drugs.

Resveratrol – an introduction

Resveratrol is a chemical substance that is taken from plants. It is not found in all plants, there are a limited number of plants that contain Resveratrol. It is a substance that plants actually use in the fight against disease, which links quite neatly into its uses when it comes to human beings. This is because it is used in a very similar way with patients.

Resveratrol is called a phytoalexin. This is because it is produced naturally by plants as one way in which bacteria can be attacked. The substance is also developed by plants when they fight against fungi. Phytoalexins are basically natural antibiotics produced by plants when they are under attack. If one views them as a part of an overall defence system, then one can understand their value. The fact that they are natural also suggests why they are so useful in the medical world. This particular type of self defence substance comes under the umbrella of phytochemicals. The phytochemical world contains plant derived chemicals that are studied by scientists for their therapeutic benefits to humans.

Phytoalexins are fascinating because they fulfil quite an aggressive function. Particularly aggressive with organisms that attack their host plant, they act as toxins towards the attackers, breaking cell walls and delaying maturation.

Plants in the natural world that contain Resveratrol include grapes and their skins, and berries, including raspberries and blueberries. Resveratrol can also be found in peanuts.

The substance can also be found in something called Japanese knotweed. Knotweed is a plant that is native to parts of Asia. Knotweed was introduced to Western gardens primarily for its physical appearance, which resembles bamboo, and so can be highly ornamental. However, the effects of the weed can also be quite aggressive, with knotweed invading cracks in gardens and taking root. It is generally a disliked plant due to the fact that it is extremely tenacious.

Knotweed provides the Resveratrol that is used as a nutritional supplement. Studies carried out on mice have shown that the Resveratrol found in knotweed can have some anti-aging properties. The research is still light on this issue, but this has not stopped some people doing a roaring trade in the stuff.

The biggest argument for making Resveratrol a common substance in diets comes in the form of red wine. Knotweed began to gain a reputation for improving health when it was discovered that the French people, while having a diet that is incredibly high in fat, were still showing as having low cholesterol levels. Scientists began to focus on the Resveratrol content of red wine. While it is actually quite minimal, the effects on the health of French people are convincing enough to make scientists believe that Resveratrol has a great impact on our health.

Incidentally, the highest concentration of Resveratrol can be found in peanuts. Within this snack food the Resveratrol content is high and pure. If anyone wanted to boost their Resveratrol intake, then snacking on peanuts is probably their best bet.

Resveratrol is so liked by the medical community due to the fact that it is a clearly powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants reduce the impact of oxidants on the cells in the body.

Resveratrol is also favoured due to the belief that it aids tolerance of exercise. In addition, it is also believed to help lessen the impact of memory loss.

Anti-aging is where Resveratrol is really taking off. Companies are marketing it from this angle, with uses as a food supplement being particularly common. There is also some evidence that the substance can help in the fight against retroviral illnesses, such as HIV.

There is a lot of evidence that suggest that Resveratrol has an amazing beneficial effect on humans. The FDA has classed it as an investigational drug. In the meantime, it is used for a number of reasons, in sports and in helping people with their failing memories. It has become a favoured supplement in health food shops, and is swiftly becoming one of the most intriguing substances around.
