How Resveratrol works

It was found recently that Resveratrol, an antioxidant that is found in red wine and some berries, as well as in peanuts, has a very dynamic effect on one’s metabolism.

Resveratrol is a natural substance, found in plants. But the medical world has been falling over themselves in recent years to capitalise on the therapeutic benefits the substance carries. Used by plants as part of their natural defences against bacteria and fungi, Resveratrol has a similar effect in humans. An aggressive substance, at least where plants are concerned, it can attack the cells of plants that are attacking their host plant, and even disrupt cell maturation.

The dynamic effect alluded to at the start of this article occurred when the substance was used in a scientific study on mice. The mice in question were gaining weight, and the negative effect of the weight gain was beginning to tell. There was damage to the livers of the mice, due to the fact the livers were becoming enlarged. There was also a high level of insulin present in the mice. It was found that the mice in the study responded very well to Resveratrol, so much so that the substance eased all of the negative effects the weight gain was bringing.

The risk of death among the mice was even reduced, by up to 31 per cent. These amazing effects obviously brought a lot of benefit to the health of the mice, as well as providing clues to how the substance could be used in humans. In addition to the health benefits when it came to weight gain, the substance also improved the balance and coordination the mice exhibited. This meant the substance was not only producing overall, global health benefits, but also helping to reduce the effects of aging.

The gene that provides such an amazing effect on the mice is called SIRT-1. The scientists who carried out the study found that calorie restriction was the main effect of Resveratrol. Calorie restriction can cause longevity, in mice as well as humans.

It has not yet been established that Resveratrol can activate SIRT-1, but tests are currently being carried out to prove or disprove this.

In any case, if you wanted to take in as much SIRT-1 as the mice did, and thus work towards living forever as well as improving your balance and coordination to a large degree, you would have to drink a lot of red wine. In fact, you would probably have to drink more red wine than it is possible to.

Obviously, red wine is not really a great source of Resveratrol (and if it was, red wine is not really something to overindulge in). There are peanuts, if you want to build up a steady diet of the substance. Peanuts do contain Resveratrol in a pure form, and in the highest concentration yet found. This means that they are a sensible source of the substance.

Resveratrol is currently viewed as a bit of a life saver (or life prolonger) by many scientists and the drug companies they work for. Look out, however, for supplements that can be bought in health food shops. They will probably be able to sell you various supplements that contain Resveratrol, and at a good price.
The ant-aging factor is one of the main reasons why the substance is being hailed as the new wonder drug. However, any substance that can actually improve your balance and coordination, no matter your age, is of great benefit to mankind.

It is a safe substance to use, bit so many trails are being carried out on the stuff at the moment that it may seem, like the future of the substance (at least in the medical sense) is by no means secure.
One would do well to remember, though, that Resveratrol is found in plants, and the substance does a very effective job of fighting disease.
