Fight Prostate Cancer With Resveratrol

You may know someone personally who has been affected by prostate cancer, and more is known now about treatments of this disease than just a few years ago. The American Cancer Society estimated 27,050 deaths in the United States resulting from prostate cancer in 2007. By understanding the benefits of resveratrol and its ability to prevent cancer, we hope that this research will help cancer survivors fight this deadly disease. If a member of your family has had prostate cancer, then information about resveratrol and its cancer prevention benefits may help to stop the cancer before it begins.

Resveratrol can be found in the skins of red grapes, and has been shown to prevent the growth of cancer cells. This is due in part to its antioxidant properties that come from the chemicals in plants. Research shows that Asian men have a lower incidence of prostate cancer than other cultures. This may be due to their diets that are high in fresh fruits and vegetables.

The results of a study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham using male mice showed that the risk of developing prostate tumors decreased by 87 percent when the mice were fed resveratrol. The treated mice also showed no harm to their systems from ingesting resveratrol. The lack of toxicity in resveratrol use is very promising.

The experiment used 82 mice in total, with 53 mice acting as a control group and the remaining 29 mice ingested 625 mg per kg of body weight each day. The mice were also fed their regular diet during the test period. The amount of resveratrol used on the mice in the experiment would be the equivalent to the amount present in one bottle of red wine.

The 29 mice were five weeks of age when they started receiving the resveratrol supplements, which was administered in a powder form. Daily blood tests were taken from the mice to confirm the presence of resveratrol in their blood. The experiment ran for a period of seven months, and after this time, the mice in control group were compared to the mice receiving the resveratrol supplement. The control group had a 23 percent incidence of prostate cancer, where the group eating resveratrol had an incidence of only three percent. This result is equivalent to an 87 percent reduction in cancer.

If these same results can be proven in humans, then resveratrol would be an effective cancer treatment.

If humans consumed a bottle of red wine each day, the negative side effects to your health would outweigh any positive ones gained from ingesting resveratrol. Therefore, the best way to consume the quantity of resveratrol needed to improve your health is to take a high quality nutritional supplement that contains resveratrol, along with other essential vitamins and minerals. By taking a supplement, you have the benefits of resveratrol without the negative effects of consuming large quantities of alcohol.
